Today’s Critter Chat concerns: Tips for deskunking your pet!

Did you know that skunk spray contains a repellent compound also found in decomposing meat and feces? A skunk can blast their target from ten to fifteen feet away and the oily musk is like sap or glue.

Effective products for deskunking include:
·Skunk Kleen or Skunk Odor Eliminator.
·A good shampoo and twenty minute soak in tomato juice or paste.
·AND believe it or not the Massengil brand douche works fabulously. Just soak the pet for fifteen to twenty minutes and follow with a shampoo.
·Finally, another home remedy is to mix one quart of 3% hydrogen peroxide, with a quarter cup of baking soda, and one teaspoon pet shampoo. Soak the pet for up to five minutes and rinse.

Getting your pet to clean up its act isn’t always easy but you can certainly help!

Today’s Critter Chat concerns: How to Help Pets Beat the Heat

Summer heat is hard on pets who can die from overheating or the complications of heat stroke in just minutes.

So, here are five tips to beat the heat with pets:
1 Leave your pets at home.
2 Provide plenty of cold water, shade, and use misters to cool the air.
3 During heat waves keep animals in air-conditioned rooms.
4 Don’t leave pets in the car even for a minute.
5 Avoid taking pets to outdoor events like flea markets, festivals and parades.

If you have a problem:
-Use cool water and douse an overheated pet with a hose or immerse in a tub of water.
-Wet the belly and inside of the legs and run cool water over the tongue, mouth and paw pads.
-Get the animal to a veterinary hospital immediately

Today’s Critter Chat concerns the human risk of salmonella from feeding Natural Pet Treats & Raw Food Diets

So, what are natural pet treats & raw food diets & just how concerned do you need to be?

Natural pet products include a variety of raw, dried or smoked items made from animals. Animal treats include ears, hooves, hides and hearts from a number of species.

Recently, three human illnesses were caused by Salmonella bacteria linked to natural treats. The Public Health Agency of Canada is advising people who give their pets natural treats and/or raw food diets to use caution.

In my thirty plus years with animals, I’ve handled both raw foods and natural pet treats without a problem. The key is to make sure that you wash your hands with warm water and soap after handling the foods and treats.
